In a world ridden with America franchises, I find myself starving for genuine character. Isn’t it hilarious that I can get the same cheeseburger in Australia, which is halfway across the world, as I can from the drive-through in Paso Robles, California? Halter Ranch Vineyard is living proof that our ever-globalizing world is not completely void of uniqueness and distinction.

Flicking my blinker on and rolling into the shaded entry of the ranch, I am immediately taken back to a simpler time. I park next to the towering 1885 Victorian home that you might recognize if you’ve seen Arachnaphobia. Refresher: an eight-legged, two-fanged killer spider with an attitude once multiplied in the basement of this historical beauty.
The vineyard consists of 250 acres of carefully cared-for vines, some of which are Certified Sustainably Grown™ and others which are farmed biodynamically. (You should have seen his cover crop trial that involved 20 species and an early unusual snow.) An airstrip runs through the middle of this remote vineyard…fun fact – Ronald Reagan landed his plane here for a big rally in 1967.
Halter Ranch Vineyard also boasts a champion Coast Live Oak tree with a 324-inch trunk circumference. This giant is 55 feet high and has a 104 feet crown shading! It’s the perfect place for a picnic for two . . . or two hundred.
Vineyard Manager Mitch Wyss, a brilliant, bona fide hippie (and former river guide) trapped in the new millennium, is adamant about living life to the fullest and savoring all that is wonderful and good. I followed his white pick-up truck to a little corner of the ranch . . . unofficially known as “Club Mitch”. A pond fed by a natural spring, hibachi BBQ, wooden dock perfect for taking a leap, and a bottle of Halter Ranch Syrah come together to form a perfect venue for sipping, sunsets, and star gazing.
It’s easy to fall in love with Halter Ranch’s wine. Whether you are looking for a rich Rhône or a summer Rosé, Halter’s wine does not disappoint. When you find yourself in need of some genuine charm and great wine, escape from the familiar and visit Halter Ranch.
